GLP-1 medications can affect appetite and how quickly food moves through the digestive system. Side effects vary, so ongoing communication with the prescribing team is an important part of weight-management care.
Know which changes to track
Nausea, decreased appetite, fullness, burping, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal discomfort can occur with some GLP-1 medications. A symptom being listed as common does not mean you have to ignore it. Track when it began, how long it lasts, whether it affects eating or drinking, and whether it is improving, stable, or becoming more severe.
Record vomiting, bowel changes, pain location, urine output, dizziness, and any symptoms that occur after meals. Also note recent medicine changes and other products you take. These details help the prescribing provider decide whether the symptom may be medication-related, whether another condition should be considered, and what evaluation is appropriate.
Protect nutrition and hydration
A reduced appetite can make it harder to eat enough protein, fiber, and varied foods. Small, simple meals may feel more manageable than large or rich meals when nausea or fullness is present. Eat slowly and stop when comfortably satisfied. Avoid forcing food, but tell the care team if you are regularly unable to meet basic nutrition needs.
Sip fluids across the day rather than waiting until you feel very thirsty. Vomiting and diarrhea can increase the risk of dehydration, while adding fiber without enough fluid may worsen constipation. People with heart or kidney conditions may have individualized fluid guidance and should follow their clinician's plan. A registered dietitian can adapt meals around symptoms, food preferences, and medical needs.
Respond to constipation or diarrhea carefully
For constipation, gradual fiber intake, regular movement, and an unhurried bathroom routine may help. Adding a large amount of fiber suddenly can increase bloating. For diarrhea, focus on tolerable foods and fluids while tracking frequency and duration. Persistent symptoms deserve a call because they can affect hydration, nutrition, and the absorption of other medicines.
Do not automatically add several over-the-counter digestive products. Laxatives, antidiarrheal medicines, nausea products, and supplements have different risks and may be inappropriate when abdominal pain or another warning sign is present. Ask the prescribing team or a pharmacist what is compatible with your health conditions and medication list.
Stay connected with the prescribing team
Keep scheduled follow-up visits and laboratory appointments. Tell the provider about symptoms before they become difficult to manage. Do not change the amount, timing, or frequency of a GLP-1 medication on your own, and do not combine it with another weight-loss product unless the prescriber has reviewed the full plan.
Share any history of gallbladder, pancreas, kidney, stomach, or intestinal problems, as well as pregnancy plans and personal or family medical history requested by the prescriber. Bring a complete medication and supplement list. Telehealth can support symptom review and nutrition follow-up, but an examination or testing may be needed when symptoms are persistent or unclear.
Recognize warning signs
Contact the prescribing clinician promptly for repeated vomiting, worsening abdominal pain, very little urination, persistent diarrhea, severe constipation, vision changes, or symptoms that prevent normal eating and drinking. New pain in the upper abdomen, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fever, or pale stool also needs prompt medical evaluation.
Seek urgent in-person care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially when it extends toward the back or occurs with vomiting. Call 911 for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or throat, fainting, severe confusion, or another sign of a serious allergic reaction. Do not wait for a routine weight-management appointment when symptoms appear emergent.
