Nutrition labels can feel like fine print, but a few numbers tell you most of what you need to know. Start at the top and work down.

Serving size first

Every number on the label refers to one serving — and a package often contains several. If a bag has three servings and you eat the whole thing, triple everything you see.

The numbers that matter most

For most people, added sugars, sodium, and fiber are the most useful lines to watch. Fiber is one to maximize; added sugars and sodium are ones to keep an eye on.

  • Added sugars: aim low
  • Sodium: mind the daily total
  • Fiber: more is better

Use the % Daily Value

The %DV shows how much a nutrient contributes to a daily diet. As a rule of thumb, 5% or less is low and 20% or more is high — handy for quick comparisons between products.
