Most dietary sodium comes from prepared and packaged foods rather than the salt shaker alone. Reading labels can help you compare similar products and decide where a lower-sodium option would matter most.

Start with the serving information

The sodium number on a Nutrition Facts label applies to the listed serving size. Compare that serving with the amount you normally eat. If a package contains multiple servings and you eat the entire package, your sodium intake will be higher than the amount shown for one serving.

Serving sizes are standardized for comparison, but they are not personal recommendations. You may eat more or less depending on the food and meal. The useful step is to connect the label with your realistic portion rather than judging the printed number in isolation.

Compare similar foods directly

Sodium can vary widely among breads, soups, sauces, deli meats, cheeses, frozen meals, and canned foods. Place two similar products side by side and compare sodium for equivalent serving sizes. A modest difference can become meaningful when you eat that food often.

Do not assume that a product described as natural, plant-based, or organic is lower in sodium. Check the Nutrition Facts panel. Claims such as reduced sodium are comparisons with another version of the same product and do not automatically mean the food is low in sodium.

Look at the whole meal

A meal can collect sodium from several sources. A sandwich may include bread, deli meat, cheese, pickles, and a condiment. Each item can seem manageable alone, but together they may contribute much more. You can keep the parts you value most and adjust the others.

For example, use less cheese, choose fresh poultry instead of deli meat, add vegetables, or use a lower-sodium condiment. With soup, pair a smaller portion with fruit, salad, or a sandwich made from less salty ingredients. This approach preserves convenience and flavor.

Build flavor beyond salt

Acid, herbs, spices, aromatics, and texture can make lower-sodium food satisfying. Try lemon or lime juice, vinegar, garlic, ginger, smoked paprika, pepper, fresh herbs, toasted seeds, or roasted vegetables. Make changes gradually so your taste can adjust.

Rinsing canned beans and vegetables can remove some surface sodium. No-salt-added versions provide more control when they are available, but regular canned foods can still fit. Avoid turning sodium reduction into a demand that every item meet the lowest possible number.

Follow medical advice that fits you

Not everyone needs the same degree of sodium restriction. People with high blood pressure, heart failure, kidney disease, liver disease, or certain medication plans may receive specific instructions. Those directions should take priority over general food-label advice.

Do not sharply restrict sodium or increase potassium-based salt substitutes without professional guidance. Some salt substitutes can be unsafe with kidney problems or certain medications. A healthcare provider or registered dietitian can help you set appropriate goals while keeping meals practical.
