Adult fever and virtual care

Telehealth can review fever with other symptoms and health risks, but confusion, breathing trouble, severe pain, or dehydration needs urgent care.

Fever is a sign that the body is responding to an illness or another health problem, not a diagnosis by itself. A virtual visit can help place the temperature in context and identify whether testing or an examination is needed.

Measure and record what you can

If you have a thermometer, note the reading, the time, and how it was measured. Tell the provider whether you took any medicine beforehand and whether the temperature changed afterward. Do not rely only on feeling hot or chilled, although those symptoms are still worth reporting when a thermometer is unavailable.

Keep a short timeline showing when fever began and whether it comes and goes. Include other symptoms such as cough, sore throat, congestion, rash, headache, neck stiffness, vomiting, diarrhea, urinary discomfort, or localized pain. The pattern of associated symptoms often matters more than a single temperature reading.

Share exposures and medical risks

Mention contact with sick people, recent travel, insect or animal bites, new sexual exposure, contaminated food, or recent medical and dental procedures. Tell the provider about any wound, skin redness, or new medication. These details help guide testing without assuming that one exposure proves the cause.

Provide information about pregnancy, immune system conditions, cancer treatment, organ transplant, diabetes, heart or lung disease, and recent surgery. People with certain health risks may need earlier in-person evaluation even when the fever seems modest. The provider should also know about all current medicines and allergies.

What telehealth can assess

The provider can observe your alertness, breathing, speech, skin appearance, and ability to move. They may ask you to show a rash, wound, or swollen area and may guide simple observations. Use good lighting and have another adult nearby if you feel weak or unsteady.

Telehealth cannot replace listening to the lungs, examining the abdomen, checking for neck stiffness, or collecting samples. Depending on your symptoms, you may need respiratory testing, urine testing, blood work, imaging, or a direct examination. A referral for in-person care is a safety decision, not an indication that the virtual visit was unnecessary.

Monitor hydration and overall function

Pay attention to whether you can drink, urinate, stay awake, and perform basic activities safely. Dry mouth, very little urine, dizziness when standing, repeated vomiting, or increasing weakness may suggest significant fluid loss. A provider can discuss general hydration and monitoring based on your medical history.

Do not take several fever or cold products without reviewing their active ingredients. Some contain the same medicine, and others may be unsafe with certain health conditions. Ask a qualified provider or pharmacist about medication safety without exceeding labeled directions or using someone else's prescription.

Know when fever needs urgent care

Call 911 for fever with severe trouble breathing, chest pain or pressure, new confusion, fainting, a seizure, bluish lips, or signs of stroke. Seek immediate evaluation for fever with a stiff neck, a severe or rapidly worsening headache, widespread purple spots, severe abdominal pain, or inability to stay awake.

Prompt in-person care is also appropriate for worsening dehydration, persistent vomiting, rapidly spreading skin redness, or a person who appears seriously ill. Fever during pregnancy, after recent surgery, or in someone with a weakened immune system should be discussed promptly. Follow the provider's recommendation if an examination is needed.
