Can an online doctor help with ear pain?
Telehealth can review ear pain and related symptoms, but many cases still require an in-person look inside the ear.

Ear pain may come from the ear itself or from nearby areas such as the throat, jaw, teeth, or sinuses. A virtual visit can help assess urgency, although a camera usually cannot provide a full view of the ear canal and eardrum.
Describe the pain and what came before it
Tell the provider when the pain began, whether it affects one ear or both, and whether it is constant or intermittent. Mention a recent cold, congestion, sore throat, swimming, air travel, dental symptoms, jaw pain, or an injury. Explain whether hearing feels muffled and whether there is ringing, pressure, dizziness, or imbalance.
Report any fluid, pus, or blood coming from the ear. The provider may ask whether the outer ear hurts when touched or pulled and whether there is swelling behind the ear. In children, mention changes in sleep, feeding, activity, and response to sound rather than relying only on ear pulling.
What video can and cannot show
Good lighting may allow the provider to see redness or swelling of the outer ear and surrounding skin. They may ask you to turn your head or gently indicate where the pain is strongest. Do not insert a phone, camera attachment, cotton swab, or other object into the ear unless a clinician has provided specific equipment and instructions.
Most ordinary cameras cannot show the eardrum safely or clearly. An in-person provider can use an otoscope to inspect the canal and eardrum and may also examine the throat, jaw, and lymph nodes. This examination may be necessary before the cause or an appropriate treatment plan can be determined.
Why age and medical history matter
Very young children may not be able to describe pain, dizziness, or hearing changes. A provider may recommend an in-person visit sooner based on the child's age, symptoms, and general appearance. The child should be present and visible during the telehealth appointment, with an adult available to provide history and assist safely.
Tell the provider about diabetes, immune system problems, previous ear surgery, hearing devices, recurrent ear infections, or a known eardrum opening. These factors can change the level of concern. Also provide a current medication and allergy list before any prescription decision is discussed.
Protect the ear while awaiting evaluation
Avoid placing drops, oils, or household substances in the ear unless a qualified provider confirms they are appropriate. Some substances may be unsafe if the eardrum is not intact. Do not attempt to remove a deeply lodged object or compacted material at home, since this can push it farther in or cause injury.
Keep track of fever, drainage, hearing changes, and whether pain is improving or worsening. If the provider recommends monitoring, ask how long to watch and what should prompt another visit. Continued pain, repeated episodes, or persistent hearing changes usually deserve an in-person examination.
Seek prompt care for warning signs
Get urgent in-person care for severe pain with swelling or redness behind the ear, an ear that appears pushed outward, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, or significant bleeding. A foreign object, battery, or injury inside the ear also requires prompt professional evaluation.
Call 911 for new neurologic symptoms, loss of consciousness, or a serious head injury. An infant with fever or a child who is difficult to wake, struggling to breathe, or appearing very ill needs immediate assessment. Telehealth can help with triage, but it should not delay an examination when warning signs are present.
