Online care for pink eye symptoms

Video can help assess eye redness and discharge, but pain, injury, light sensitivity, or vision changes require prompt in-person care.

A red or irritated eye can have many causes, including infection, allergy, dryness, injury, or exposure to an irritant. A virtual visit may help sort through the pattern, but some eye symptoms require a direct examination.

Describe exactly what changed

Tell the provider whether one or both eyes are affected and which eye changed first. Describe redness, itching, burning, gritty sensation, watering, discharge, eyelid swelling, or crusting. Mention congestion, sore throat, fever, recent illness, seasonal allergies, and close contact with someone who has similar symptoms.

Explain whether your vision is normal once you blink away tears or discharge. Report pain inside the eye, sensitivity to light, halos, severe headache, nausea, or difficulty keeping the eye open. These details are more important than simply labeling the problem as pink eye and may change how quickly you need an examination.

Set up a clear video view

Use bright, indirect light and hold the camera steady. The provider may ask you to look up, down, and to each side or gently lower an eyelid. They may want to compare both eyes and see the surrounding skin. Do not press on the eye or place an object beneath the eyelid.

A photo taken in good light may capture redness or swelling more clearly than a moving video. However, pictures cannot measure eye pressure, inspect the cornea closely, or test vision fully. If the provider cannot obtain a useful view or is concerned about a deeper eye problem, an in-person eye examination is the appropriate next step.

Share contact lens and exposure details

Tell the provider if you wear contact lenses, when you last wore them, and whether you slept, showered, or swam in them. Contact lens use can change the level of concern because some eye problems need prompt examination. Do not put lenses back in an irritated or painful eye until a qualified eye professional says it is safe.

Mention any chemical splash, dust, metal, plant material, makeup product, or other substance that may have entered the eye. Also report recent eye surgery, an eye injury, or a history of significant eye disease. Exposure-related symptoms may require immediate rinsing and urgent specialist or emergency guidance rather than routine telehealth care.

Discuss care and limiting spread

The provider may explain whether the pattern appears more consistent with irritation, allergy, or a contagious illness, while being clear about the limits of a remote assessment. Not every red eye needs a prescription. If treatment is considered, your allergies, age, pregnancy status, contact lens use, and eye history all matter.

Wash your hands before and after touching the area around your eyes. Avoid sharing towels, pillowcases, eye products, or contact lens supplies. Do not use another person's eye drops or an old prescription. Ask the provider when you can return to close-contact activities and whether household members need to take any precautions.

Get urgent eye care when needed

Seek prompt in-person care for eye pain, new blurred or reduced vision, marked light sensitivity, a foreign object, significant injury, severe swelling, or symptoms after chemical exposure. Contact lens wearers with pain or vision changes should be evaluated promptly. Sudden vision loss or a serious penetrating injury is an emergency.

Call 911 when eye symptoms occur with signs of stroke, such as facial drooping, new weakness, confusion, or difficulty speaking. An eye examination is also appropriate when redness keeps returning, symptoms worsen after the virtual visit, or the eye does not improve as expected. Do not let a convenient video visit delay vision-saving care.
