Sinus pressure and telehealth visits
Telehealth can assess congestion, facial pressure, and symptom timing while identifying situations that require an in-person examination.

Facial pressure and congestion are often described as a sinus infection, but several conditions can feel similar. The symptom timeline and accompanying changes are important when deciding what kind of care you need.
Describe more than the pressure
Tell the provider where you feel pressure and whether it affects one side or both. Mention nasal congestion, drainage, reduced smell, cough, sore throat, dental discomfort, headache, fever, or ear pressure. Explain whether symptoms began with a respiratory illness, appeared during allergy season, or followed air travel or another pressure change.
Color or thickness of nasal drainage by itself does not establish the cause. The provider will be more interested in how long symptoms have been present, whether they initially improved and then worsened, and how much they affect sleep and normal activities. Recurring or long-lasting symptoms may require a different evaluation than a short, uncomplicated illness.
What can be assessed virtually
A virtual provider can observe your general appearance, breathing, voice, and visible swelling. You may be asked to move closer to the camera, show the area around your eyes, or gently indicate where discomfort is located. They may also ask about allergies, asthma, dental problems, previous sinus procedures, and medicines you have already used.
Telehealth cannot provide a complete examination of the nose, ears, teeth, or face. It also cannot directly check for tenderness or evaluate vision in the same way as an office visit. If symptoms suggest a dental source, an eye complication, or another condition that needs hands-on assessment, the provider may refer you for in-person care.
Why the timeline affects next steps
Many short-term sinus symptoms occur as part of a viral respiratory illness and change gradually as the illness runs its course. Other patterns, including persistent symptoms or a clear worsening after initial improvement, may deserve additional review. The provider will use the timeline together with severity and your health history.
Avoid assuming that every episode requires a prescription. A provider may discuss symptom monitoring, general comfort measures, testing, or an in-person examination depending on the pattern. If a medication is considered, they should review allergies, other medications, pregnancy possibility, and medical conditions that may affect what is safe.
Make the visit more useful
Check your temperature if you can do so safely and write down when it was measured. Have your medication list nearby, including nasal products and nonprescription cold remedies. Tell the provider exactly what you have taken and whether it caused side effects. Do not combine products without checking their ingredients or discussing them with a qualified professional.
Use a well-lit room so the provider can see your face and eyes. If swelling changes during the day, a clear photo may help show the earlier appearance. Do not rely on a photo alone if swelling is spreading, vision is changing, or pain is becoming severe. Those changes need prompt medical assessment.
Know the urgent boundary
Seek urgent in-person care for swelling or redness around an eye, vision changes, severe eye pain, severe or rapidly worsening headache, confusion, a stiff neck, fainting, or new weakness. Call 911 for severe breathing difficulty, signs of stroke, or another sudden emergency. These problems should not wait for a routine virtual appointment.
An in-person visit is also appropriate when symptoms keep returning, remain significant despite the initial plan, or may be related to a tooth or facial injury. People with weakened immune systems or complex medical conditions should ask about earlier evaluation. Telehealth can help with triage, but it cannot rule out every complication remotely.
