What happens after a telehealth visit

The end of a video call is often the beginning of the next stage of care. A useful follow-up plan should explain what to do, what to watch, and when the situation needs to be reassessed.

Review the visit summary

Read the written summary when it becomes available and compare it with what you understood during the conversation. It may include the symptoms discussed, the provider's assessment, general care instructions, tests, referrals, or follow-up timing. Contact the service if important details appear incorrect or the instructions are unclear.

Keep the summary with your health records and share it with your regular healthcare team when relevant. This is especially important if the virtual provider does not have access to your complete history. Good continuity helps later clinicians understand what was considered and how your symptoms have changed.

Complete tests and referrals

If testing was ordered, confirm the location, preparation requirements, and expected timing. Ask who will review the result and how you will be notified. A result appearing in a portal does not always mean the provider has reviewed it, and an automated high or low flag does not establish a diagnosis.

For a referral, check whether you need to contact the office or wait for them to call. Tell the telehealth service if you cannot access the recommended location or appointment. Do not silently skip an important test or examination; the provider may be able to suggest another appropriate route.

Use prescriptions safely

Review the medication name, purpose, instructions, and important precautions with the provider or pharmacist. Make sure the prescriber knows about allergies, pregnancy possibility, health conditions, and everything else you take. Do not change the prescribed amount, share the medicine, or save it for an unrelated future illness.

Contact a healthcare professional if you have questions, cannot obtain the medication, or develop a possible side effect. Call 911 for trouble breathing, fainting, severe swelling, or another serious reaction. Starting a prescription does not remove the need to monitor the underlying symptoms or attend recommended follow-up.

Track whether the plan is working

Write down changes in symptoms, temperature, hydration, sleep, and ability to perform normal activities. Use specific observations, such as whether you can keep fluids down or walk comfortably, rather than simply writing better or worse. Photos can help track visible swelling or a rash when they are taken consistently.

Follow the provider's timeline for reassessment, but seek care sooner if new warning signs appear. An initial virtual assessment reflects the information available at that moment. A new symptom, faster progression, or lack of expected improvement can change what type of care is appropriate.

Know where to go if symptoms worsen

Use the follow-up contact listed in your instructions for routine questions and stable concerns. An urgent care center may be appropriate when you need a same-day examination, testing, or treatment but the situation is not life-threatening. The provider may direct you to a specific setting based on your symptoms.

Call 911 for severe trouble breathing, chest pain or pressure, signs of stroke, loss of consciousness, uncontrolled bleeding, or another rapidly developing emergency. Do not wait for a portal reply or scheduled telehealth appointment. If you are unsure and symptoms appear severe, choose immediate emergency evaluation.
