Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents move upward into the esophagus. Occasional symptoms and a recurring condition are not the same, and chest discomfort should never automatically be blamed on digestion.

Notice the full symptom pattern

Heartburn is often described as burning behind the breastbone, especially after eating or when lying down. Some people notice sour fluid or food coming back into the throat, frequent burping, nausea, a bitter taste, or discomfort high in the abdomen. Reflux may also be associated with cough, throat irritation, or a hoarse voice, although these symptoms have many possible causes.

Write down when symptoms happen, how long they last, and what position you were in. Note trouble swallowing, pain with swallowing, vomiting, bleeding, unexplained weight loss, or food feeling stuck. A symptom diary can help a provider see patterns, but eliminating many foods based on a few episodes can make eating unnecessarily restrictive.

Identify triggers without assuming

Large meals, lying down soon after eating, alcohol, smoking, and certain foods or drinks can worsen symptoms for some people. Triggers are individual. A food commonly associated with reflux may not affect you, while a less obvious meal size, timing, or combination may matter more. Test one manageable change at a time so you can tell whether it makes a difference.

Some medicines can irritate the esophagus or affect reflux symptoms. Review prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements with a pharmacist or provider rather than stopping them yourself. Pregnancy, a hiatal hernia, and body-weight changes may also influence symptoms, but only a clinician can assess how those factors apply to your situation.

Try practical daily changes

If symptoms tend to occur at night, leaving time between your final meal and lying down may help. Smaller meals may be more comfortable than very large ones. Clothing that places heavy pressure around the abdomen can also aggravate symptoms for some people. These changes are experiments, not a requirement to follow a rigid reflux diet.

If weight management is part of your broader health plan, discuss it without crash dieting or skipping needed nutrition. A registered dietitian can help create meals that are balanced, satisfying, and compatible with your personal triggers. Smoking cessation support may also be relevant. Stress reduction can improve how you cope with symptoms, but persistent reflux should not be dismissed as stress.

Know what an evaluation may involve

A provider will ask about the location and timing of discomfort, swallowing, nighttime symptoms, medicines, pregnancy, and heart risk factors. Many reflux concerns can begin with a telehealth discussion. An in-person examination or testing may be needed when symptoms are persistent, unusual, difficult to control, or accompanied by warning signs.

Over-the-counter reflux products have different ingredients, warnings, and intended lengths of use. Read the Drug Facts label and ask a pharmacist if you take other medicines or have kidney, liver, or heart conditions. Repeatedly covering symptoms without discussing them can delay evaluation of inflammation, narrowing of the esophagus, an ulcer, or another cause.

When symptoms need urgent care

Call 911 for chest pressure, squeezing, or pain with shortness of breath, sweating, faintness, nausea, or discomfort spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Heart symptoms can resemble indigestion. Do not wait for an antacid to work, and do not rely on a virtual visit when a heart or breathing emergency may be occurring.

Seek prompt in-person care for vomiting blood, black stool, repeated vomiting, severe or worsening abdominal pain, painful swallowing, food stuck in the esophagus, or an inability to swallow liquids. Arrange a medical visit for unexplained weight loss, persistent hoarseness, frequent nighttime symptoms, or symptoms that continue despite appropriate self-care.
